Reading about the Sino-Vietnamese War, I noticed an interesting bit: in general, people are desperately patriotic. They act strongly the second they feel their country is in danger.
Being invaded by foreign forces, Vietnam suffered greatly and its people did their best to defend themselves resulting in lots of heroic acts, some are unimaginable. The same thing can be said about almost any other revolutions, from those ancient rebellions to modern Arab Spring movements. The entire country united (at least in the northern part) and fought back with their bare hands as necessary. Winning two big wars must have made Vietnam feel invincible, especially with full support from communist countries/Russia (Soviet by then, it was one of the two superpowers at the time, their military forces rivaled those of the Americans). It’s certain that Vietnam could not sit still with Cambodia knocking on their back. With superior experiences, Vietnam could push through Cambodia’s defensive forces to teach them a lesson and let the war escalate if possible (which it did).
China was threaten when Russia and Vietnam became allies and they could easily harm China with a flank attack. The situation turned worse for China when its friend, Cambodia, was wiped out in the Cambodian–Vietnamese_War. China might have other reasons but it’s pretty obvious that China had to do something to protect itself. The best defense is a good offense and China did exactly that. They kept most of their forces at the Russian border and launched the rest to Vietnam direction. I meant what is the worst for them? If the attack fails, they clean up the northern Vietnam while sustaining some casualties. If all go well, they just go forward and take over the entire country.
So when did it begin? People are patriotic but it’s just so happen that they are greedy too, some are (way) more than others. However, it all balances out in the end I guess.
What can we do? Enjoy life when we can: play Flappy Bird, criticize each other, say sorry, rinse and repeat. And of course, fight when we must.
Sylvie and I are going to have an engagement ceremony next Wednesday after four years (and one day) being together. It has been such a long time and we really appreciate the support from our families and friends to overcome lots of problems along the way. Especially, we want to thank Dương Sam for creating the opportunity for us to start our LDR and for giving many useful advices, too.
We hope that things only get better in many years to come. Currently we don’t have plan for a wedding in the forseeable future FYI.
Today, I was sitting at the cafe typing away when a guy approached me and asked if he could borrow my charger? He said he was installing his friend’s computer but his charger didn’t work. I assume his non-technical friend forgot his/hers…
I was nervous at first but then I said okie and lent him the charger. It’s not very valuable anyway and it will be fun to watch how thing go from there.
Updated at home (midnight): around 1600 the guy came to me and ask whether my battery went dead and when I were going to leave. I told him my battery was still okie and I wouldn’t leave anytime soon. It’s worth noting that he borrowed the charger at around 1400. And then, at about 1710, he finally gave it back to me. I’m charging with it now so I can say the experiment ended successfully!
Most of the time, people tell you not to look back. I think it’s a good advice in general because we tend to regret if we ever think about something in the past. But heck, I love looking back. I’m into data-porn, very much.
The most selfish, one-letter word is "I", avoid it. The most satisfying, two-letter word is "We", use it. The most poisonous, three-letter word is "Ego", kill it. The most used four-letter word is "Love", value it. The most pleasing, five-letter word is "Smile", keep it. The fastest spreading, six-letter word is "Rumor", ignore it. The hardest working, seven-letter word is "Success", achieve it. The most enviable, eight-letter word is "Jealousy", distance it. The most powerful, nine-letter word is "Knowledge", aquire it. The most essential, ten-letter word is "Confidence", live it.
I have this quote as my favourite all the time: “Software is like sex, it’s better when it’s free”. Uh oh. Today I thought about some other things and suddenly realized that it will be even way much better if it’s supported. Seriously.
Uhm, fortunately, putting the beginning characters of those facts together will reveal a magical word (okie, maybe not that magical): PACMAN, which leads to new facts:
Fact 7: There is an awesome PACMAN game for you who wondered what the hell PACMAN is (and why the fcuk it was bold). Trust me, give it a try and you will be able to answer your questions: http://ponology.com/cutie/pacman
Fact 8: It turned out that tomorrow (June 5th, 2010) is Sylvie Truong's birthday. Yayyyy!
Fact 9: She’s my girlfriend! Hurayyyy!
Fact 10: I love her! Yeah yeah!
That’s pretty enough for my facts collection, I guess. Have a good day!
Warning: This piece of entertaining sh!t uses inappropriate language for people under 18 years old and people who think they are completely innocent. You have been warned!
What is a douche bag? You may want to do a few quick searches by yourself but simply saying: it’s a person which is mean, rude, fcuking annoying and X (replace X with whatever you find disgusting). Please notice the way I used “it” instead of “he” or “she” and “which” instead of “who”. It deserves that, really. That’s why it’s a douche bag!
People usually judge others by their appearances (stereotype?) but we all knows the only way to fully understand a person is to talk to him or her, watch his/her behaviors, etc (but it’s hard to spend a lot of time for everybody, I know). In almost-20 years of my life, I guess I haven’t met enough bad people personally so that when I first found the term “douche bag”, it was quite difficult for me to visualize it. You know, people remember things by visualizing them in their heads and when something matches the visualized image, along with the term itself, its details (memories, properties, etc) will pop out from every corner of the brain. (Un)Fortunately, I have just known a douche bag. It has all the “qualities” which were mentioned above in an unbelievable way. Ewwww… Sorry, the visualized image in my head is so gross that mentioning it makes me feel so bad and sick. Err, Ewwww…
Okie! So… what kind of a jerk is that?
He (it’s a male) has a girlfriend. They are even listed as engaged in Facebook’s relationship status (which is, in fact, illegal at the age of 20). And then… what? He did flirt with other’s girlfriend! I think we have a love rectangle here which involves 4 people at once. This is so awesome! I myself experienced a love triangle (well, this is such an embarrassing thing to talk about) but this rectangle thing… It’s wayyyy much shittier than that. Suddenly I thought back about my old experience and felt it a piece of cake. I laughed so hard writing this, OMFG (read: Oh My Fcuking God)!
Sh!t hit the fan for the douche bag when it turned out that the girl doesn’t like him but for some complicated reasons, she still wants to be friend with him so she tried to keep things under control but that fcuker found it not enough (this is my guess only) so he kept pushing things and crossed the line (this is the truth). One of the most bullsh!t behaviors of the idiot is getting to know more about the girl by looking for and browsing her old stuffs (blog entries, photos, etc). Hmm, this is an easy-to-understand move as I did it all the time, FYI (read: For Your Information). He got lost of his mind when he left comments but he didn’t want anybody to be able to trace him down. To be honest, the only way to not let others know what you did is not doing it at all in the first place, especially in this age of global networks with broadband internet connections (and when your rival is potentially a nerd). He even made it more amusing by exposing the plan in one of his comments, what a fcuking genius! He also made heaps of crap by using “if” in some kind of a regret voice. I think he wished it had been a type I condition (possible in future) but too bad, it is a sentence in type III (unreal condition). Sorry, dude!
And then the guy (the girl’s boyfriend, the geek) smelt something in the air soon enough. That douche bag became highly suspicious in no time because of his traces (told ya!). All those things forced the guy to keep an eye on the fcuker all the time. But the guy still tried to make friendly contact with that douche bag with a belief that good people still exist in the world. It’s sad to say but among 6.6 billion people today, there are bad ones definitely. Unfortunately (and obviously) our douche bag here is one of the worst (it’s purely just my subjective point of view). The asshole responded with a competitive tone of voice just like he was declaring a war. Guess what? Wars are for idiots with their stupidities and it’s certain that both sides will get hurt. Hmm, in this situation I should have said 4 parties, shouldn’t I? That’s such a complete dumbass. The guy finally decided to do nothing further than that and simply fallback trusting his girlfriend (and write this piece of sh!t). Oh, that mother fcuker son of a bitch, go to hell!
I always wonder why “women” is longer than “men” and “Venus” is longer than “Mars”. It’s so unfair, isn’t it????
Recently, I have spent time to finish this book. Originally, I knew about the book a while because it has a catchy name and my (elder) sister has had it in her bookshelf for a few years. I did take it down several times and tried to read it but I stopped after a few pages. One time, as I remember, I felt as sleep after reading the introduction! Oh yeah, it’s embarrassing, hehe.
But thing gets changed. Last Christmas, all of a sudden, my ex-girlfriend brought me the book with a note which makes me really curious so I decided to try to read it one more time. And yeah, after… exactly 4 months (wow), I make it! I must admit it’s such an useful book!
Basically, the book supports a theory of the author (John Gray) that men and women came to Earth from different planets. They speak different languages and that’s why they misunderstand each other all the time. Also, Mars and Venus’s system of definitions and points of view do not share any thing in common, that leads to a big problem when they don’t know what (or understand why) each other wants and because of the lack of communication, their problems gets worse and worse. The book explains in detail all those differences and sometimes he gives readers some useful tips too.
Actually, there are some parts that he mentioned again and again which is really annoying (or maybe it’s because of the translation only, I’m not sure). And it may be hard to bring his theory to life anyway because each person is unique and it takes true love and strong commitment (my sister’s) to smooth everything up.
To me, the book is at least a useful reference source in case I need to interpreter Sylvie’s thoughts (which become extremely complex every now and then). Hahahahah
A few days ago, my girlfriend told me it was a long time since the the last time I wrote something. Hmm, it’s sad but true. Suddenly I realized how busy I was. And then I also found out that she loves to read my stuff as much as I want to read hers. Hmm….
These days, I saw 2 friends of mine broke up with their boyfriends. Really, seeing friends’ breaking up always makes me think about myself. I don’t know all of their stories but base on what I know, there is a pretty interesting fact: when I was younger, I thought the most common reason of breaking up is one of two people loves someone else. It may be true when we were teenagers because we changed almost everyday but now? Not anymore! We grown up. Our characteristics are defined. The most scary things now become our own thoughts. As long as (almost) everything goes along well, nothing happens. And then, at some points, when there is a tiny little problem where the two people can not agree with each other, it will become bigger, bigger and finally, explode: BOOOOM!
Can’t we do anything?
Yes, we can. Communication! Currently, I’m reading a book called “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus”. I will definitely write something after finish reading that book but now, all I can say is there is always a way to do things. What matter is whether we want to do it or not. See? That’s our thoughts that make a relationship work or not.
I personally think mine will work, absolutely beautifully. No doubt!
Lost access to my projects and applications related files (@#$%)
No wireless in Ubuntu (using wired connection, took 10 minutes to find the cable)
It’s good to install applications and store files in different partitions from OS’s. Sometimes you can still boot up the OS just to look at the familiar interface and… do nothing!
Setting up a dual-boot system is always a good decision, you will have plan B when one of the OS went down. Well, but I need a plan C right now! @#$%
Oh, today when I read the news about Google new DNS related service I laughed at myself realizing that people are greedy, the engineers at Google Inc. are greedy and hell yeah, I’m fcuking greedy too! If you haven’t read the other (older) entry about Google yet, you should take a look now (http://blog.daohoangson.com/post/225943179/google-sickness)
Well, let me summarize a little bit. The goal of Google is to make the internet faster and many people said that they (Google people) make the internet faster to help users do search in their engine faster (which generates revenue through ads/sponsored links) and users can find more useful information faster so users can visit other websites faster (which once again, generates revenue for Google itself since many many many many websites implemented Google advertising services). And then Google now involves in Mobile market (with Android mobile operating system), it’s a little different at first but actually, people now use internet-enabled mobiles more and more to read news, play games, purchase/listen music, etc. The investment which runs into mobile industry is raising day by day with new startups. So… Google wants to make internet work better on mobile devices to make maps display faster (which generates revenue for Google when it attaches local store information in the map for example), emails load faster (revenue again with ads/sponsored links), and so on… [I don’t talk about rumors but you should know that maybe a Google phone will join the market soon.] Google even pushes things further with a PC operating system called ChromeOS which targets netbook (small laptop which is good at accessing internet), from testers reviews, this operating system is just a browser (Chrome browser, also a product of Google) with battery indicator. LOL.
Talking about Google’s services for normal users, we have a long list (the full list of Google’s services can be found here):
Search with Google Search. The largest search engine at this time. Including searching functionality for images, videos, blogs, news, books, etc [wicked sick - there are so many of them]
Email with Gmail (a pioneer at it’s launch in 2004 with AJAX technology, POP3 support and large storage)
Linguistic services including Google Translate (allow sentences translation or whole webpage translation, work like a translation proxy) and Google Dictionary (works much like using “define” in search query but it’s better in come cases when the definition even includes images, thanks to @xuanhuy238 for the tip)
Social networking with Orkut (this social networking is dominant in Brazil). Accompany in the social field is Friend Connect (working much like Facebook Connect, has just added Twitter integration a few days ago while Yahoo! adopted Facebook Connect no longer before)
Manage and use mobile more effectively with Google Voice (acquired from other company, currently in beta and only works in US, allow users to use one single Google-based phone number to route to other phone numbers with conditions, schedule, etc. It also allows voice message transcribe, archive, history, logging, etc. In conclusion, this product is very cool and I would love to give it a try if I have chance)
Oh, how can I forgot Google Wave? The new collaboration platform which has been trending in Twitter for over 2 months and caused a lot of confusion to testers (note that testers are all tech-savvy people). As this product is still in beta, it’s interesting to see how it will grow up, soon
So, you see, every aspects in our life, Google has something for us to use. And to people in Vietnam, we are being blocked from Facebook, Google released it new Google Public DNS service! Oh, I was just kidding! Of course Google open this service not only for Vietnamese people but for it’s goal: fasten the Internet. With amazingly-easy-to-remember IP address like 220.127.116.11 and 18.104.22.168 and really-fast response (around 50ms from Vietnam, FPT connection), many people will choose Google’s DNS service instead of OpenDNS’s (the IPs are 22.214.171.124 and 126.96.36.199)
Well, many people talk about Google will soon become evil but I do not really care until the next acts from Google. Up to now, they are just trying to generate as much revenue as possible and they are doing very well (I believe so). They just want to make more revenue. We have the right to be greedy, right? If it is fast, we want it faster. If it is long, I want it longer. If it is close, I want it closer. Hell yeah!
The title is true, absolutely true! I’m sick of Google now. You know why? Because they are too awesome! OMFGWTFBBQCHIXWINGS (this is a new phrase which I learnt a few days ago). To find out about (a tiny little part of) Google’s awesomeness (I checked this word in… Google, it’s correct), please read this entry and follow the attached links:
The first one is a TechCrunch article about the new Google Navigation application. A little note here: other companies sell navigation application but Google gives this application for FREE!!!! And as you read the article, even if Google charged users for this application, it would still “win hands down” because there are many many advance features in this application. Okie, here is the link: http://bit.ly/17J34q
The second one is a website called “The Data Liberation Front”. Here is the description on their website: “The Data Liberation Front is an engineering team at Google whose singular goal is to make it easier for users to move their data in and out of Google products. We do this because we believe that you should be able to export any data that you create in (or import into) a product. We help and consult other engineering teams within Google on how to “liberate” their products”. Their recent achievement is the new feature in Google Docs which allows users to download several documents at a time, in a zipped file (just a month ago, when I wanted to download files from Google Docs, I had to download once file at a time, it was painful). This team has a lot of works to do but they are really cool, don’t you think? Visit their website: http://bit.ly/3hdmKR
The third one (and the last one for today) is an article from Mashable which broke the news about Los Angeles goes Google for $7.2 million. You should know that Google’s launching a campaign called “Go Google”. It’s mission is encourage companies to use Google Apps for email, document, schedule, etc… And this deal with Los Angeles is definitely a win-win! I believe there will be more and more giant organizations/companies go Google in the near future. Read the article here: http://bit.ly/4yi4Aw
Okie. That’s enough for today. I’m sick of Google now but now I have to explore what’s new in Google Wave. Oops, Google again! @#$%
Final note: For those who don’t know what is Google Wave, try to… ask Google at their homepage: http://google.com
Last note (I promise): Oh, I’m sick of myself toooo
